COVID-19 Alters Course of Giro d’Italia 2022

Like many other Classics events taking place in 2022, Giro d’Italia 2022 is underway and set to commence, after a year of uncertainty.

The race in Hungary was originally planned for 2020, however COVID-19 forced this to be postponed, until a future date. Later pandemic risks in Sicily only furthered this delay, causing many elements of this planned race to be reused and altered for the Giro d’Italia 2022.

This year’s route, The Hungarian Grande Partenza, was announced on Wednesday by RCS Sport. This year’s route has been drastically altered from the initial plans marked down in 2020, with alterations in routes and scheduling having been necessary to allow the event to commence.

Initial drafts in 2020 proposed the previously mentioned Budapest time trial as the Stage 1 event, with two flat stages to follow in Nagykanizsa and Györ. Instead, the time trial has been moved to a later date in the event, and the flat stages completely reworked.

Giro d’Italia 2022 Hungary Route

From the information that has been revealed so far, Stage 1 is scheduled to kick off the Giro d’Italia 2022 in Budapest, with a road stage from Hungary’s capital to the small town of Visegrád. This town is known for its phenomenal architecture, being host to a breathtaking early Renaissance castle where this first stage is set to conclude.

The 195km ride is set to be relatively clear, with challenges set to include the ride along the shoreline of Danube, and the aforementioned hills that mark the ancient land that surround the medieval castle in Visegrád. These challenges will be sure to keep riders on their toes during these final stretches of the course, and will be sure to push athletes to their limit after the already grueling distance of the course.

Stage 2 will host the previously planned Time Trial, now set for day two of the Giro d’Italia 2022 as opposed to the opening event. As previously stated, this 9.2km track will begin in Heroes’ Square in Pest, and will follow a punishing course into the center of Buda.

The time trial route will consist of a climb up river, and is host to bumpy cobblestone paths and pitches of up to 14%. It will take a lot of determination for the athletes involved to make it up these slopes quickly, and incredible muscle strength to push their bikes up and over the treacherous cobbles. Stage 2 is certainly set to provide a thrilling challenge.

A sprint is set for Stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia 2022. A mostly flat track, this 201km marathon is perfect for cyclists renowned for their speed. Aside from a single steep ascension to Tihany Abbey, this course is practically hazard free, allowing cyclists to reach blinding speeds previously unattainable in the more obstacle heavy courses. High speeds and high tensions are guaranteed to make this race one to behold, and not one to be missed out on.

Giro d’Italia 2022 Sicily Route Remains Mysterious
