Granfondo: Alta Valtellina

The 2021 edition of the Granfondo Stelvio Santini will donate one euro per participant to the “Il Sorriso di Car-lotta” voluntary association founded after the premature death in 2020 of neurologist Carlotta Emilia Bolis, wife of pro triathlete Giulio Molinari. Carlotta was committed to improving health in the Alta Valtellina and the association continues her work today.

There is, of course, an incredibly deep bond between the Granfondo Stelvio Santini and Valtellina: starting from Bormio, the event stages a peaceful invasion of the Sondrio valley for one Sunday each year, its three routes taking in the region’s iconic climbs before ending at the same finish-line at the top of the Stelvio Pass.

That bond has now produced a partnership between the organisers and the “Il Sorriso di Car-lotta” non-profit organisation working in the Valtellina area. Founded by pro triathlete Giulio Molinari with the help of Livio Molinari, Jacopo Bolis, Gianluca Mario Stefano Albè and Thomas Confortola after the premature death in 2020 of Giulio’s wife, neurologist Carlotta Emilia Bolis, the organisation brings top doctors to Alta Valtellina for clinics and to help improve public health across the district. The project was Carlotta’s idea but now lives on thanks to commitment of a growing number of supporters.

The Granfondo Stelvio Santini, which this year has been moved from the start of June to September 12th, will be donating one euro to the association for every participant.

«We believe that sport and popular events like ours must act as a driver for positive initiatives like ‘Il Sorriso di Car-lotta’ – declared Paola Santini, Marketing Manager Santini Cycling Wear – and so we were delighted to sign up for the project and are certain that the Granfondo competitors will also embrace the genuine spirit behind our move».

Entries are still open on the event’s website: competitors have until August 15th, in fact, to snap up one of the last remaining bibs for this year’s Granfondo.

Participants have a choice of three different race routes to tackle on the day: the 60-kilometre Short Route, the 138-kilometre Medium Route and, for the fittest riders out there, the 151-kilometre Long Route that also includes one of Europe’s most gruelling passes, the Mortirolo.
