Stage victory for Huber and Geismayr after a final sprint

The starting shot for the 22nd BIKE Transalp has been fired. The first day of the legendary stage race led the 700 mountain bikers from more than 30 nations from Tux in the Zillertal region to Brixen in South Tirol. The first stage victory and so the yellow jersey goes to Urs Huber and Daniel Geismayr (Bulls) after a final sprint with their competitors Jochen Käß (Transalp winner 2018) and Daniel Geismayr (Centurion Vaude). Overall the BIKE Transalp covers 560 kilometres and 18.500 metres of altitude, divided into seven stages.

Tux, 14th July 2019. With 105 kilometres and 3206 metres of altitude the first stage was quite an affair. From the foot of the famous Hintertux Glacier the race took off, crossing the Tuxer Joch, the Valsertal, the Brenner Pass and further to Brixen. “The first stage has been extremely demanding”, Urs Huber (SUI) says. The first rider, crossing the finish line, was Daniel Geismayr (AUT), followed by Urs Huber. Finally Simon Stiebjahn (GER) won the sprint against Jochen Käß (Centurion Vaude) and could secure the victory for Bulls – with a lead of just seven tenths of a second.

The Bulls riders are trying to steal the Transalp title of Centurion Vaude for many years now. Time for a new winner? „For sure, it will be an exciting week. To win the title, we cannot allow us to make mistakes and have to constantly perform well“, so the answer of Urs Huber.

The third podium also goes to team Bulls: Martin Frey (GER) and Hansueli Stauffer (SUI) finished with a delay of 8.08,9.

As the best Mixed-Team the German-Austrian duo Stefanie Dohrn and Handl Philip (Cenrturion Vaude) mastered the first stage with a clear lead.

With tears of joy in their eyes, the best women, Elena Wagner and Nina Hartleb (Scott Sebamed Mädelz) from Germany crossed the finish line. “We never would have dreamed of the leader jersey”, says Elena Wagner (44), midwife and mother of four children. “We are just ordinary people with ordinary jobs.” The women are riding the BIKE Transalp for the sixth time. “During this week, we can clear our heads, enjoy the landscape and suffer – a little bit.”

„To clear her mind“ – is also the motivation of Ellen Blome (Team CRAFT and Friends). It is her ninth Transalp, but the first time in a mixed team. „Riding in a team with a men is different, I put myself under more pressure”, the German is joking. „It is a pity that there are so few women that are confident enough to take part. For me it is a great week: spending time outside, meeting great people and just cycle.“

For the first time in the BIKE Transalp history also individual riders were permitted to take part and almost 200 riders took this chance. Best solo rider of the day is the Columbian Diyer Rincon Gomez.
