Storey Nominated While Cavendish Misses Out

Britain’s most successful Paralympian of all time Sarah Storey has been included on the shortlist for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, where she has the opportunity to cap off a spectacular 2021.

Storey, who was born without a functioning left hand, clinched three goal medals in Japan during the summer which took her overall haul up to 17.

It is the third time the 46-year-old has been nominated for the award having been shortlisted in 2012 and 2016, but the magnitude of her success has many calling for her to win the award this time around. Prior to switching to a career in cycling, Storey was a swimmer, winning five gold medals across the 1992 and 1996 Games in Barcelona and Atlanta. However, since trading in the pool for two wheels, she has an incredible 12 medals spanning 13 years after winning the first in Beijing back in 2008.

Elsewhere on the list, Storey will be joined by double-gold medalist swimmer Adam Peaty, footballer Raheem Sterling, US Open champion Emma Raducanu, diver Tom Daley and two-time heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury.

Sarah Storey took to social media to comment on her third nomination, saying; “It’s the shortest of short lists to be part of and I’m so incredibly honoured to be named amongst these sporting greats.

“Fortunately Tyson Fury was born when I went to my first Games, but the others weren’t #doingitfortheover40s.”

Although the nominees are of a particular strong calibre this year, there was a notable admission in Mark Cavendish after the legendary sprinter returned to the professional circuit in resurgent form having struggled for over three years, clinching four stage wins at the Tour de France and moving level with all-time great Eddy Merckx on overall stage wins. The 36-year-old was a previous winner in 2011, but if he manages to break Merckx’s record should he appear at this year’s Tour, he may well return to the shortlist.

Jason Kenny will also feel as if he might have been in with a chance, after becoming Britain’s most decorated Olympian winning a gold and silver medal in the track cycling in Tokyo earlier this year.
