The popular fundraising cycling sportive, the Team Townend Challenge returns this weekend in memory of much-loved brothers.
The challenge was organised after keen cycling brothers, Christian and Niggy Townend were tragically killed on a ride in 2010.
The aim of the challenge is to bring family, friends, and cyclists from all over to join in and raise funds for RoadPeace, a charity that campaigns for road safety and justice for victims of road collisions. Since 2010, the challenge has attracted hundreds of riders, who have collectively raised over £75,000.
Each participant can choose between three routes, each of which was a favourite of Christian and Niggy. The Classic (22 miles, 2,361ft climbing), Challenge (40 miles, 4,582ft climbing) and Dirty Double (66 miles, 7,676ft climbing).
Thanks to a team of hard-working volunteers, each participant is treated to a great selection of post-ride refreshments, provided at the starting point inside the village hall.
The ride, which takes place on Saturday, will also this year be accompanied by an evening event at Cockermouth Scout Hut, featuring live music, a raffle, a DJ, and a charity auction, offering prizes from festival tickets to outdoor gear, with all proceeds going to RoadPeace.
Harry Shepherd, who helps to organise the event, said, “The Team Townend Challenge is a special day for so many people, where we remember our friends and raise money for an important cause in RoadPeace. It’s always a cracking event and there are still plenty of places available, so do get involved. Everyone is also welcome to our evening event at the Scout Hut, and there are some great prizes to be won. As always, huge thanks to the volunteers and supporters who make it happen, and all the businesses who have donated prizes.”
Entrants can sign up for the challenge for a cost of £27 online at teamtownend.org. Entry is available on the day, for a price of £30.
Tickets for the evening event are available to buy on the day by donation for a suggested amount of between £5 to £10 per person.
