Search & Ride: David Cachón’s Epic MTB Pilgrimage to Riglos

Video

In the heart of Spain’s Aragonese Pre-Pyrenees, where colossal red rock towers pierce the sky and vultures soar on thermal winds, professional mountain biker David Cachón launched a new kind of adventure. The first episode of his bold new series, Search & Ride, takes us to Riglos, a tiny village with a population of just 60,   but with a landscape that dwarfs even the wildest imaginations.

This isn’t just another mountain biking video. It’s a cinematic pilgrimage, a raw and reverent tribute to the mountains, and a reminder that sometimes, the trail takes more than it gives.

Riglos: Where Earth Touches Sky

Located 45 km from Huesca, Riglos is a mecca for climbers and adventurers. Its defining feature, the Mallos de Riglos, are towering red conglomerate formations,   some over 300 meters high,   sculpted by millions of years of wind and water. These natural cathedrals have long been a proving ground for climbers, with legendary ascents dating back to the 1950s.

But for Cachón, a two-time Trials World Champion and Guinness World Record holder, Riglos offered something more: a chance to blend his love of mountain biking with the raw verticality of alpine terrain. The result? A ride that would test not only his skills but his spirit.

Search & Ride: A New Kind of MTB Series

Search & Ride isn’t your average trail series. It’s a hybrid of adventure documentary, personal journey, and adrenaline-fuelled riding. Each episode follows Cachón as he seeks out the most remote, rugged, and awe-inspiring trails across Spain and beyond,   on mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and e-bikes.

But this isn’t just about the ride. It’s about the story behind the trail: the people, the history, the land, and the lessons learned when things don’t go to plan.

The Vulture Viewpoint: Climbing with a Bike

Episode 1 opens with a breathtaking panorama of Riglos at dawn. The cliffs glow crimson in the early light, griffon vultures circle overhead, and the Gállego River murmurs below. Cachón sets off to climb the Cubilillo os Fils via ferrata, also known as the Vulture Viewpoint,   a name that proves prophetic.

With his bike strapped to his back, he ascends the exposed iron rungs and steel cables of one of Aragón’s most exhilarating routes. Every step is a dance with gravity, every glance a reminder of the void below. As the village shrinks beneath him, the horizon expands, revealing the vastness of the Pyrenean foothills.

But then, disaster strikes.

The Fall: When the Mountain Takes Its Toll

In a moment of misfortune, Cachón’s bike snags on a rock and plummets into the abyss. “I watched it fall in slow motion,” he recalls. “Bouncing off the wall before disappearing into the brush below. Silence followed. The mountain had taken my bike.”

For many, that would have been the end. But not for Cachón. Bruised but unbroken, he descended the mountain in “emergency mode”, no chain, bent parts, and a deflating rear wheel. That night, he couldn’t sleep. The story wasn’t finished.

The Return: Redemption on Two Wheels

The next morning, sore but determined, Cachón returned to Riglos with a new bike and a renewed sense of purpose. The vultures were still there, circling like guardians of the cliffs. The Mallos, bathed in golden light, stood as silent witnesses to his resolve.

The descent that followed was nothing short of sublime. Narrow trails snaked between the towering rocks, loose scree threatened every turn, and sheer drops loomed just inches from his handlebars. But with every meter, the ride became a meditation,   a communion with the mountain.

More Than a Ride: A Lesson in Letting Go

As he reached the valley floor, covered in dust and sweat, Cachón realised that Riglos had given him more than a story,   it had given him a lesson. “Sometimes,” he says, “you have to let go in order to keep moving forward.”

Search & Ride is built on that philosophy. It’s not about conquering nature, but about listening to it. About embracing the unknown, the unpredictable, and the untamed. It’s about finding meaning in the ride, even when the trail disappears beneath your wheels.

Nature, History, and the Human Spirit

Riglos is more than a backdrop,   it’s a character in its own right. Home to one of Europe’s largest griffon vulture colonies, the cliffs are alive with the silent flight of these majestic birds. Their presence adds a mythic quality to the landscape, as if the mountain itself is watching.

The region is steeped in history, too. In the 1950s and ’60s, climbers like Rabadá and Navarro pioneered routes up the Mallos with little more than rope, courage, and grit. Today, their legacy lives on in every handhold and foothold,   and now, in the tire tracks of a mountain biker who dared to follow a different path.

🔍 What’s Next for Search & Ride?

With Riglos setting the tone, Search & Ride promises to be one of the most exciting MTB series of the year. Future episodes will explore remote trails, legendary landscapes, and untold stories across Spain and beyond. Whether on a gravel bike, e-MTB, or classic hardtail, Cachón’s mission is clear: to ride where few dare, and to tell the stories that trails whisper to those who listen.
