Performance People is a new podcast by hosts Sir Ben Ainslie + his broadcaster wife Georgie Ainslie who in this week’s episode interview professional road cyclist and Tour de France winner David Millar + his sister, CEO of Belstaff, and former CEO of INEOS, Fran Millar, for their first ever interview together as a duo.
In the emotive episode, David and Fran, who managed David’s cycling career, discuss how, following his two-year ban from professional road cycling, and winning the Tour de France, David made it his mission to work closely with anti-doping movements to prevent what happened to him from happening to younger riders. They also touch on how cycling has now undergone a complete ‘cultural shift’ for the better since the early ’90’s.
David reveals: “When I came into the sport it was fundamentally a doping culture, and it had been for a hundred years. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s it was considered that it was impossible to win the Tour de France clean. I wanted to win races clean.”
He also describes the unwavering support from his sister during the most challenging time of his life when he was banned from cycling: “Frances stood by me, I’d affected her relationships and she supported me through thick and thin when I was getting attacked left right and centre. Then I came out of it and Lance Armstrong called me Saint David!”
The heartfelt episode is full of revealing insights and revealing moments.
