The Long Way Around

Mission Workshop designers wanted to rethink how to bikepack, using a backpack, for their new bikepacking adventure. Yes, we know, bikepacking means that the stuff you bring on your back traditionally goes on your bike. Mission Workshop is now flipping the idea on its head: you can bear all your stuff on your back, including your bike.

Four riders (Lael Wilcox, Rugile Kaladyte, Erik Nohlin, Chris Burkard) set out for the Sierra Nevada Wilderness bikepack using custom-modified Project Workshop R6 Field Packs.

Over 4 days, with 23,000 feet of elevation gain, they combined bikepacking and backpacking into a 181-mile ride.

They wrote “What we have here isn’t your typical bike trip. Four close friends ventured into the great woods of the American west to experience the land via bike. Their original plans thwarted due to the devastation of wildfires that seemly strike the west more and more each year. With some last-minute rearranging of the route and a nod that it was safe, the ride was on! They took off to experience a ride and hike that some might call, downright insanity. “
