The Peloton Cafe: The UK’s Best Bike Friendly Stop Offs

The Peloton Cafe – Hull

Most commonly used in Le Tour De France, the french term “Peloton” means “ball,” however, the phrase is more often used with the meaning “group” for example, can be translated into “the main field or group of cyclists in a race.” Unknown to many though, it can be used to refer to a group in any sporting event.

Founded in 1292 by Edward I known then as “Wyke-upon-Hull”, The former industrial hub of Kingston-Upon-Hull (Hull) unfortunately like many places in Britain, fell victim to major destruction during World War Two, since then, however, it has been rebuilt and is now home to numerous cosy pubs, quirky museums, and picturesque buildings and is now a vibrant cultural hotspot in East Yorkshire. Popular for being home to one of the world’s longest suspension bridges, The Humber Bridge, which opened in 1981, measures 1.4 miles, and is popular with walkers and cyclists alike.

A popular ride undertaken by many cyclists runs from the Humber Bridge through to Hull city centre, the ride follows National Route 1 signs and is mainly on flat traffic-free paths. The ride allows you to explore parks, a nature reserve, picnic spots and magnificent views of the bridge. The journey is around 20 miles and takes around two hours if you aren’t tempted by the many stop-offs and eateries along the way.

A short diversion from this route just off Boothferry Road is Pickering Road, where you would come across The Warners Health Club & Physio Centre, which, located within, is one of Hull’s newest and most welcoming Cafes, The Peloton Cafe.

Opened in 2017 and staying true to its translation, The Peloton Cafe prides itself in being “a place for everyone” be it a regular, a passer-by, or even a four-legged friend. With a TripAdvisor rating of 4.5, the cafe is an attractive rustic hotspot offering a wide variety of drinks as well as cakes and other hot and cold food items. They’re also licenced to sell alcohol and offer customers the chance to enjoy prosecco with their popular afternoon teas.

The Peloton Cafe offers a locally sourced fairtrade brand of coffee carefully selected for their taste, quality and value. The coffee is known as the Wilberforce Freedom Blend and was inspired by Hull’s links to the abolition of slavery and celebrating the name of William Wilberforce and his associates in their achievement.

The Peloton is very popular with cyclists as well as being the cafe of choice for the popular Peter Pan Park Run, a free 5K community event held every Saturday. Customers can enjoy a breakfast or an afternoon tea in their comfortable indoor seating area with much of the decor being made from recycled materials.

The cafe is also available for private hire and is popular with dog walking groups and birthday parties, as they can host large numbers of people. All bookings, no matter how big, should be made in advance as the cafe can get relatively busy.

With its warm, welcoming and attractive atmosphere and a fantastic range of items on offer, the peloton cafe is the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee and a catch up with friends along your journey through the UK’s City of Culture.
