The HERO Südtirol Dolomites, renowned as the world’s toughest mountain bike marathon, is once again proving that its mission goes far beyond the rugged trails of the Dolomites. In 2025, the event proudly partners with Obiettivo3, an initiative founded by Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi, to champion inclusivity and empower athletes living with disabilities.
On Saturday, 14 June 2025, nine athletes from Obiettivo3 will take on the HERO’s short race trail, 60 kilometres of demanding terrain with 3,200 meters of elevation gain. These athletes, racing outside the official rankings, include a visually impaired competitor riding with a guide and a trio forming a relay team. Their participation is a powerful testament to resilience, courage, and the unifying power of sport.
Gerhard Vanzi, CEO and founder of the HERO, emphasised the event’s broader vision:
“The HERO’s focus on sustainability isn’t limited to the environment—it includes society and inclusivity. The determination and spirit of Obiettivo3’s athletes perfectly reflect the HERO values.”
The HERO Organising Committee is also hosting a charity auction featuring a painting by South Tyrolean artist Veronica Caterisano. Displayed at the S-Lounge during the HERO Bike Festival, the artwork will raise funds for Obiettivo3’s “Obiettivo Tricolore” project—a two-week, cross-country relay involving over 60 disabled athletes traveling from southern to northern Italy using bikes, handbikes, Olympic wheelchairs, and even swimming.
This initiative not only promotes adaptive sports but also aims to inspire new athletes to rediscover their potential through physical activity.
The festivities begin on Thursday, 12 June, with the HERO Charity Night at Selva Val Gardena’s Medal Plaza. The highlight? A breathtaking escape act by Andrew Basso, the modern-day Houdini. Suspended upside down in a water tank, handcuffed, and racing against a three-minute clock, Basso’s performance mirrors the HERO spirit, bold, daring, and unforgettable.
