Chasing Light on Two Wheels: the Maratona dles Dolomites

As the sun rises over the jagged silhouette of the Dolomites, casting golden light across the alpine passes of Alta Badia, thousands of cyclists clip in for one of Europe’s most revered granfondos, the Maratona dles Dolomites, Enel. This year, on 6th July 2025, 8,000 riders will line up under the emblematic theme of “Lüm”, Ladin for “light”, for the 38th edition of this iconic event.

Eight minutes. That’s how long it takes sunlight to reach Earth. It’s also just enough time to crest one of the event’s legendary climbs, where every pedal stroke is etched with sweat and dreams. For us cyclists, that light is more than a metaphor, it’s motivation. It’s the reason we rise early, train hard, and travel far. Because the Maratona isn’t just another sportive; it’s a pilgrimage.

This year’s route offers three breathtaking courses, each winding through the UNESCO-protected Dolomite peaks:

  • Sellaronda (Short Course): 34.2 miles with 5,840 feet of climbing
  • Middle Course: 65.8 miles with 10,522 feet of elevation
  • Long Course (Maratona): 85.5 miles with a thigh-burning 13,753 feet of vertical gain

From the majestic Passo Pordoi to the daunting Giau, each pass is a rite of passage. The silence of the traffic-free roads, the smell of pine and espresso, and the echo of cowbells are as much part of the ride as the steep gradients. It’s not just the legs that do the climbing, the heart does too.

For many, securing a place is as challenging as the route itself. Half of the spots are allocated by lottery, and the rest go to pre-registered riders and charity participants. And speaking of charity, the Maratona continues its tradition of giving back: over £700,000 has been raised in recent years to support sustainable projects and local communities.

Beyond the numbers, the Maratona is about connection, with the land, with fellow cyclists, and with oneself. This year’s newly unveiled logo, created by Manuel Bottazzo, captures this spirit perfectly. A stylised “M” symbolises both the mountain of Sassongher and rays of light, representing transformation and renewal. It’s not just branding; it’s a beacon.

If you’re lucky enough to ride the Maratona, you’ll leave with more than tired legs and a medal. You’ll carry the light with you, the kind that guides, challenges, and ultimately transforms. Until then, keep climbing, keep chasing the dawn.

See you on the start line.
