This summer, eight new docking stations will be added with a further six added by the end of the year. Furthermore, Santander Cycles is making available an extra 1,700 bikes, taking the number to over 14,000.
Data published by Transport for London showed that last month was the best May in the 10-year history of the scheme, with 1,120,620 hires per month, the highest ever number of hires per week (362,925) and the highest ever number of hires per weekend (132,979).
Furthermore, since the launch in March, the free Santander Cycles hire scheme for NHS workers has seen 30,000 journeys made.
Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I am delighted with the unprecedented cycling demand over recent months.
We’ve seen three times the number of people riding in some parts of our city compared to before the crisis, a huge demand for our free cycle hire scheme for staff and carers at the GSP, and multiple Santander Cycles records broken.
“By adding new docking stations, bicycle rental hubs and bikes, we make it even more convenient to take two wheels.
Dan Sherwood, Marketing Director at Santander UK, added: “Breaking records with the best May in London ‘s ten-year cycle hire scheme with over a million hires is unbelievable, but we are even more pleased that so many critical and key workers have benefited from the free-cycle hiring scheme during this challenging time.
“We hope expansion plans will ensure more local communities than ever can benefit from such a great scheme.”
