Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I am delighted with the unprecedented cycling demand over recent months.

We’ve seen three times the number of people riding in some parts of our city compared to before the crisis, a huge demand for our free cycle hire scheme for staff and carers at the GSP, and multiple Santander Cycles records broken. By adding new docking stations, bicycle rental hubs and bikes, we make it even more convenient to take two wheels.”

Dan Sherwood, Marketing Director at Santander UK, added: “Breaking records with the best May in London ‘s ten-year cycle hire scheme with over a million hires is unbelievable, but we are even more pleased that so many critical and key workers have benefited from the free-cycle hiring scheme during this challenging time.

“We hope expansion plans will ensure more local communities than ever can benefit from such a great scheme.”
