La Stelvio Santini Launches New Gravel Event for 2026 Edition

Race

The iconic La Stelvio Santini cycling event is set to expand in 2026 with the exciting addition of a brand-new gravel race, offering riders a fresh way to experience the breathtaking Alta Valtellina region. For the first time in its 14-year history, the event will span an entire weekend, with the gravel ride debuting on Saturday, followed by the traditional road granfondo on Sunday.

This expansion marks a significant milestone for La Stelvio Santini, which has long been a bucket-list event for amateur cyclists eager to conquer the legendary Stelvio Pass. The new gravel format, developed in collaboration with renowned off-road cycling brand 3T, promises to attract a broader community of riders seeking adventure beyond the tarmac.

Gravel Cycling Comes to the Stelvio

Gravel cycling has seen a surge in popularity across Europe, and the organisers of La Stelvio Santini are embracing the trend with a high-altitude gravel ride that showcases the region’s natural beauty. Riders will start and finish in Bormio, navigating forest tracks and gravel roads through Valdisotto, Valfurva, Valdidentro, and the stunning Cancano Lakes area.

Two route options cater to different levels of fitness and experience:

  • Short Route: 44 km with 1,400 metres of climbing
  • Long Route: 70 km with 2,000 metres of elevation gain

A standout feature of the long route is the Boscopiano gravel climb to the Cancano Lakes—a challenging ascent that rewards riders with panoramic views and a true sense of achievement.

Flexible Format with Timed Sections

The gravel event adopts a rider-friendly format that’s gaining traction in the gravel community. Participants can ride at their own pace, choosing whether to race or simply enjoy the journey. However, timed segments will be included to add a competitive edge:

  • Long Route: Two timed sectors
  • Short Route: One timed sector

This hybrid format allows riders to test themselves on key climbs and rolling terrain while still soaking in the scenery and camaraderie that define gravel cycling.

Road Granfondo Returns on Sunday

The traditional La Stelvio Santini road granfondo will take place on Sunday, 7 June 2026, offering three route options:

  • Long Route: 130 km with 4,270 metres of elevation gain
  • Medium Route: 108 km with 3,050 metres of elevation gain
  • Short Route: 64 km with 2,280 metres of elevation gain

All routes start and finish in Bormio and include the legendary ascent of the Stelvio Pass, one of cycling’s most revered climbs. The event continues to attract thousands of riders from around the world, drawn by the challenge and the stunning alpine setting.

Cyclists can now register for the 2026 edition, with flexible options to suit individual preferences:

  • Gravel Event Only: From €60
  • Road Event Only: From €100
  • Combined Gravel + Road Package: Special rate of €120

The road event also offers a popular pair entry option, allowing participants to share the experience with a partner, friend, or family member.

A Unique High-Altitude Gravel Experience

“This new form of cycling is growing strongly in our region right now,” said Mario Zangrando, the visionary behind La Stelvio Santini. “We are excited to offer participants a gravel experience that is probably unique in the discipline, as it develops entirely at high altitude.”

With its combination of epic climbs, scenic gravel trails, and a welcoming community atmosphere, La Stelvio Santini 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated cycling weekends of the year.
