The Udder Farm Shop: The UK’s Best Bike Friendly Stop Offs

The Udder Farm Shop & Restaurant – Dorset

The year is 1973 and a lesser-known director named Ridley Scott has captured everything it means to be British in a single television commercial. Voted the UK’s favourite commercial, “Boy on the Bike” depicted a young boy pushing his Hovis Bread bike to the top of the steep cobblestones of Gold Hill to deliver a loaf of bread, before freewheeling back down to the bakers. Of course, Ridley Scott would then go on to become one of the most famous directors in the world, with credits to his name such as “Alien” and the new film “House of Gucci” starring Lady Gaga; but he is still fondly remembered by Dorset locals for putting Shaftesbury on the map.

The commercial earned Gold Hill the popular nickname “Hovis Hill” and cemented Shaftesbury as a popular tourist attraction. Cyclists still push themselves today in the popular North Dorset Cycle Ride where participants are challenged to ride up the steep 16,09° incline. The view from the top has been described as “one of the most romantic sights in England” and can only be seen to be believed; but a short 4.3 miles away, is perhaps a slightly better-kept secret.

Situated just off the A30 is the award-winning, family-run Udder Farm Shop and Restaurant, if you’re looking for a relaxing coffee and a spot of lunch with magnificent views then look no further.

Opened in 2005 by local farmers, Brian and Jane Down, The Udder Farm Shop has become one of the most popular eateries in Dorset, and over the years has continued to grow while still maintaining the original vision of being a friendly local business that offers quality produce and supports local suppliers.

The most recent addition to Udders is the impressive extension to their already thriving onsite coffee shop. Opened in 2019, the stylish and spacious new extension boasts a fully licensed bar, comfortable seating, a diverse menu throughout the day, and unbeatable views of Duncliffe Wood. Visitors are welcome to dine in the newer part of the restaurant or in the pre-existing coffee shop, which has now become home to comfortable sofas and bar stools to make for a more intimate dining experience. Perhaps more popular with cyclists, however, is their sizeable outdoor seating area, equipped with 20 benches and plenty of garden space that overlooks the peaceful Dorset countryside.

Relax and take in the view while enjoying a meal from their wide-ranging menu, each dish is lovingly prepared by their excellent onsite chefs. Food is served from 8 am Monday to Saturday and from 9 am on Sundays, and offers a wide selection for every hour of the day. You can choose to enjoy one of their popular and mouth-watering full English breakfasts or perhaps you visit during lunch service, where you can choose from a variety of cooked meals and specials or excellent light bites such as toasted sandwiches and paninis. They even offer an exciting afternoon tea and themed evenings throughout the year.

A butchery offering home-reared meat, a wide range of store cupboard essentials, and a remarkable selection of alcohol awaits you when you enter the shop. While you’re there, be sure to pay a visit to the Deli which is brimming with home-cooked pies and snacks as well as plenty of local cheeses. The Deli also offers a superb lineup of both sweet and savoury snacks, which can be enjoyed from their outdoor seating area or stocked up for wherever you choose to venture to next.

The ride to Udders is simple as it mostly follows the road and has well-paved surfaces throughout. There are plenty of beautiful places to visit in the surrounding area, with Shaftesbury being the closest and the medieval market town of Sherborne located 12 miles west.

Wherever you choose to experience your time at Udders, one thing for certain is you will always receive service of the highest standard from their friendly and helpful members of staff, who will always be happy to welcome you in and will do so with a smile. Booking in advance is advised, especially on weekends as it can get very busy, however, the staff will always do their best to accommodate you no matter what.
