Magicshine RN 1500 Bike Light Review

News

While Magicshine may have already cemented themself as a premium brand for bike lights, their products have never strayed far from within the boundaries of being a simple, lightweight product capped off with a sleek black finish. That is, until now, with the release of the RN 1500 front headlight.

With a retail price of $89.99, the RN 1500 is available in three eye-catching colours, Space Grey, Lake Blue and Flame Red, while still maintaining the lightweight element of similar products.

“Function, fashion, and performance are neatly wrapped up in this new RN 1500 bike light.” – Magicshine

Upon receiving it is already clear how much the product differs from the existing Magicshine catalogue as the packaging of the RN 1500 strays from the traditional design of a black box with distinct, vibrant orange writing and instead comes packaged in a sleek white cardboard box with a stylish multicoloured logo. The compact casing can only be described as bigger on the inside as each of the lights comes packaged with:

  • 1 x RN 1500
  • 1 x Handlebar Mount
  • 1 x GOPRO Mount
  • 4 x Silicone Straps
  • 1 x USB-C Cable
  • 1 x 3mm Hex
  • 1 x User Manual

The inclusion of the different length silicone straps, enables the RN 1500 to be mounted to the handlebars of various road or mountain bikes. The body of the light is produced of a seamless one-piece aluminium, ensuring longer life durability and is decorated with the Magicshine logo and “RN 1500” printed along the casing. The headlight has an IPX7 waterproof rate designed to guarantee resistance to extreme weather.

The RN 1500 is produced with a simple, modern and fast USB-C charging port for it’s integrated 3.6V 5000mAh 21700 Battery which is situated in the rear end of the product. The charging cable is included with the product and supports large current charging and discharging. Once plugged in, the button situated on the top of the product will flash red, this means that the light is charging. The light will turn and remain green once the product is fully charged.

Also included in the product and which is an extremely helpful feature when out on the go is the battery indicator, which enables the rider to determine the status of the battery and whether or not the item needs charging. When the device is on, the light of the power button will indicate the battery level. To check the status when the device is switched off is just as simple, short press the power button to activate the status checker.

The light is fitted with a Garmin quarter-turn lock which is situated on the bottom of the casing, the lock is compatible with any Garmin quarter lock style handlebar, helmet or out-front mounts.

Easy to follow, fitting instructions are featured in the user manual that comes with each of the devices. This feature is perhaps the most efficient when taking into consideration the value of the product; however, if required, then separate mounts can be purchased with the product.

The light is fitted with a simple one button control and is therefore easy to use. Holding the button down for 1 second will switch the device on and off and a single press function allows the user to select through the output options. The light has 3 brightness settings, Low (300 lumen / 12:30 h:min), Medium (750 lumen / 04:00 h:min) and high (1500 lumen / 01:40 h:min) as well as 2 flash modes which can be accessed by double clicking the power button down.

The medium output is the preferable option for cycling in more of an urban surrounding and the highest output is designed more for darker roads and trails that are not likely to have gained any light from street lights or traffic. Another helpful aspect is the memory function, which is designed to save the last selected output mode, meaning riders will not have to select their preferred brightness each time.

Another feature of the RN 1500, is it’s anti-glare lens which is developed to enhance riders safety on the road. The lens levels off the upper light, to avoid light that intrudes with oncoming traffic. The lens directs more light onto the ground in front of the bike, and with the aid of small cutouts around the lens also provides better side visibility to offer riders a greater awareness of their surroundings.

It’s no secret that the RN 1500 is different from any of the other products offered by Magicshine but that does not mean the quality and style has been left behind, the variety of colours really just mean that now, riders have the opportunity to match their headlight to the design and style of their bike. The RN 1500 lives up to its manufacturer’s statement and truly is a fashionable and highly efficient device which would make a perfect addition to anybody’s bike.
